The talented South African teenager, Phakamani Mahlambi, is back in South Africa to boost Bidvest Wits after Vitoria de Guimaraes opted not to sign him at this point.
The 19-year-old left for Portugal last month to undergo a trial spell with the Primeira Liga outfit, impressing on his first appearance with the club as he helped create their third goal in a 3-0 win over Sporting Clube de Portugal.
With Guimaraes having three South Africans already at the club in Bongani Zungu, Haashim Domingo and Thibang Phete, the Bafana Bafana international seemed to settle in nicely, although will be back gracing the Absa Premiership for the time being.
Mahlambi returned to South Africa on Thursday after his trial spell with Guimaraes came to an end and it has now been confirmed that – while they won’t be signing him now – they will be monitoring his progress in the coming months.
Wits’ CEO, Jose Ferreira, told the Siya crew, “Guimaraes say that he is a very good player but not ready to play for their first team. He needs more game time and they can’t give it to him regularly right now.”
Meanwhile, the player’s agent, Glyn Binkin, said, “They felt he was not ready to immediately start for the first team and both parties agreed it would then be better to come back to SA and play regularly here whilst they continue to monitor him.”
Mahlambi could return to Wits’ team as they face Cape Town City on Friday evening.
