PEOPLE across Mzansi know Maumela Mahuwa as Susan Mukwevho on SABC2’s Muvhango.
But the actress will soon be proving to the country that she’s a woman of many talents.
Yesterday, she released her new single African Thing, which is about the beauty of our continent.
Her music career started in 2002 when she worked with music legends Chicco Twala and Maria Le Maria, but ended up making a name for herself in acting.
Maumela said she enjoyed singing and acting as they both expressed who she was.
She wrote her new song last year after talking to friends about Africa.
“We’re living in times where we don’t speak our mother tongues anymore. We speak other languages more than we do our own.
“This is a diverse country and we have to accommodate other people, but it doesn’t mean we have to neglect our own languages and traditions.”
Maumela said she was worried that most of the people were obsessed with American culture.
“I always preach about the beauty of Africa because some people seem to move away from who they really are,” she said.
She said the song was in the Afro-soul genre.
“In the song, I want to teach youngsters to appreciate that people are different.
“The world is moving so fast that the standard of being educated is based on how good you sound when you speak English.
“I’m raising awareness because I feel like we are slowly losing ourselves. I know it’s not enough, but it could be a start. More people might end up joining the movement.”
