Platinum Stars advances to the next round of the CAF Confederations Cup

Platinum Stars advanced to the next round of the CAF Confederation Cup, after a brace from goalkeeper Mbongeni Mzimela helped secure a 3-1 win over Vipers.

Vipers headed into the clash with a slight advantage, having won the first leg 1-0 last weekend.

In the first minute of the match Benson Shilongo was fouled inside the box and the penalty was awarded to Platinum Stars. Mzimela stepped up to convert the spot-kick.

Shilongo nearly made it 2-0 after 14 minutes when he connected with a cross from Ndumiso Mabena, but his header went narrowly wide.

However, Stars doubled their lead in the 26th minute courtesy of a fine free-kick from Mabena to make it 2-1 on aggregate.

The match went into the interval with Platinum Stars leading 2-0 on the night.

After a slow start to the second, Vipers pulled a goal back in the 57th minute, following a defensive error, 2-1.

As it stood, Vipers would progressed to the next round.

However, Cavin Johnson’s charges were awarded another penalty in the 80th minute. Mzimela stepped up and made no mistake from the spot, 3-1.

The clash ended on a sour note, as Robert Ng’ambi was sent for a second bookable offence
