They’ve got one last club game to worry about before switching to international mode, but Kaizer Chiefs have six stars who are eyeing a place at the African Cup of Nations.
It may not have been the best season for the Amakhosi in 2018/19 as they finished outside the top eight for the first time since 2006/07 and failed to win the MTN8 or Telkom Knockout, however they do have a chance to redeem themselves this weekend when they face TS Galaxy in the Nedbank Cup.
That game will see the end of the domestic season and signal a break for most players around the country, however there is a handful of Chiefs’ players that will still have their heart set on making an impact in Egypt when the AFCON gets underway.
While Andriamirado ‘Dax’ Andrianarimanana is the only one who has already been named in the final squad for the tournament, the likes of Khama Billiat, Teenage Hadebe and Daniel Akpeyi have made the provisional squads for Zimbabwe and Nigeria respectively and are expected to make the final cut prior to the competition getting underway next month.
Meanwhile, Chiefs also had both Daniel Cardoso and Bruce Bvuma in the Bafana Bafana squad for the qualifying game against Libya in March, and – while neither played on the day – they will no doubt be hoping to have done enough to show Stuart Baxter that they deserve to be on the flight to Cairo.
