Bafana Bafana’s road to Russia 2018 World Cup

Bafana Bafana have failed to qualify for the AFCON 2017 which will be played in Gabon. Now the focus for the South African national team is on qualifying for the 2018 World Cup which will be hosted by Russia.

The national team has gone from bad to worse over the years since hosting the 2010 World Cup. The surprising factor about their failure to qualify for major tournament is that they are more than very good for the friendly matches. They have managed to win about 95 percent of their friendly matches.

As the focus has now shifted to the world cup qualifications, South Africans are hoping for a miracle and only the SAFA and the PSL teams could help in this state of emergency for our football. If the country fails to qualify for the 2018 World Cup, then every football structure in the country should be held accountable and restructuring of all football activities should be a priority.

Shakes Mashaba is still the national team coach and he has been given the mandate to make sure the team gets through to the group stages of the qualifications by winning the preliminary rounds.

Bafana’s group and the games:

The group consist of South Africa, Burkina Faso, Senegal and Cape Verde Islands. This is Group D. the winner or number one in the group will qualify for the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

The next game will be against Senegal on the 12th November 2016 at 15h00 South African time, in South Africa and the venue is still to be finalized.

There will then be a seven-month break from the 2018 World Cup qualifiers, with World Cup qualification action resuming in August 2017 when South Africa faces Cape Verde in back to back clashes.

The first match will be away on the weekend of 1/2 August 2017 in Cape Verde, before Bafana Bafana welcome them in South Africa on Tuesday, 5 September at 19h00. The venue will also be announced shortly.

Bafana Bafana will then host Burkina Faso on Saturday, 7 October 2017 before rounding off the qualifiers with an away match to Senegal on the weekend of 10/12 November 2017.
