Bidvest Wits strengths and weaknesses

Bidvest Wits Football Club has surprised a lot of people with the quality that they have in their team. The team finished last season as the runners up to Mamelodi Sundowns and they were determined to win the league title for the first time. The team has top quality players who can win anything in the Premier Soccer League (PSL). The team was once relegated to the NFD under the guidance of Roger De Sa. They managed to get back to the top flight football again after spending some time in the NFD. The current team is not the material to face relegation any time soon if the coach is still Gavin Hunt. Let us look at the strengths and weaknesses that team possesses.

Strengths

Wits’ strengths are in their goalkeeper, defenders and midfielders. Their goalkeeper Moneeb Josephs is an experienced campaigner and has helped Wits in a lot of occasions where the team was not playing well. Although Moneeb is 36, his work rate is that of a 20 year old. Moneeb is very experienced and a great short stopper. He has played in the World Cup with Bafana Bafana when they defeated France in World Cup 2010 group games here at home. The inclusion of Daren Keet will help as he is also a quality goalkeeper. Daren has played in Europe and also represented the national team Bafana Bafana.

The team defenders Tyson Hlatshwayo, Mkhwanazi, Hlanti, and Siyabonga Nhlapo, has proven to be very difficult to let opponents pass though. They can hold up for 90 minutes and extra time without showing any crack signs. These guys are very strong on aerial balls and also physically. They cannot be dictated by any kind of striker they face. They are giants in front of Moneeb Josephs.

In the middle of the field Wits has Jabulani Shongwe, Phumlani Ntshangase, Ben Motshwari, Papy Faty, and Phakamani Mahlambi. In the wings there are players like Elias Pelembe, Dean Klate, Asive Langwe, and Pule. These players are all talented and it is up to Gavin Hunt to select the starting midfielders.

Weaknesses

The team weaknesses are their man marking (Defenders), concentration in the midfield, and the lack of scoring goals by the strikers. The Wits defense tends to be a bit rough when they are facing a skillful opponent. Instead of being composure they give away unnecessary set pieces in area where anything can happen. Most of the time the defense tends to ignore call from midfielders to supply them with enough passes. They tend to just kick the ball forward unnecessarily.

The midfielders tends to forget to help in defense and mostly caught in areas where there are no opponents when the team is under attack. They lose concentration when they are under pressure. They also lose shape when Gavin is shouting quick instructions for them to reshape.

Keene has done his bit when it comes to scoring goals and he needs someone who will complement his in the striking force. Keen is deadly but most teams are aware of his abilities which makes it difficult for him to get enough scoring chances.

Solution to their weaknesses

Wits has signed Pintjie Zulu to help in the left back position. Zulu has showed football fans his capabilities while playing for Cosmos. He has all the capabilities of defending, attacking and he can also score from set pieces.

In midfield, the team has also acquired the services of Mokgokolodi Ngele from Sundowns. Ngele is a complete footballer. He can make the team play, he can also score goals, and he is also capable of helping in defense when the team is under attack from opponents. Ngele has great control of the ball. They have also added Gabhadino Mango who is also very quick and will definitely help the team moving forward.

In the striking force the team has acquired the services of Cutbeth Malajila from Sundowns. He will definitely help Keene upfront when it comes to combinations and scoring goals. The team has managed to sign players who will be able to minimize their weaknesses and the team is definitely going out to challenge for the 2016/2017 PSL season.
