The Kaizer Chiefs team has bought new players for the 2016/17 Premier Soccer League (PSL) season. When it was announced in a conference that was held on the 27th June 2016, that the team has signed new players, a lot of fans were expecting big name players like Tokelo Rantie, Steven Pienaar and Sifiso Vilakazi. To their surprise, Ramahlwe Mphahlele was the only big name player that the team has signed.
Most of Chiefs fans were not happy at all about the quality that was signed, although some were positive. The Chiefs management were doing their best, but the fans felt the management were not doing what they were expecting. The fans were scared the same mistake that Bobby Motaung did on previous signings could possibly haunt them again during the 2016/17 season as they believe the new players were average players. They believe Bobby does not want to spend money to get quality players.
According to fans, Chiefs were supposed to sign known top quality players like Sfiso Vilakazi of Bidvest Wits FC, Tokelo Rantie of AFC Bournemouth in the English Premiership, and Rivaldo Coetzee of Ajax Cape Town FC. So far fans are only happy about the signature of Ramahlwe Mphahlele and they believe the rest are average players, the same as the ones who were released by the team at the end of last season.
Another setback in the team is that of Camaldien Abraw’s injury that will only see him coming back to the team after 9 months. The Kaizer Chiefs striker was injured while on national duty with the Togo national team. There were rumours about him not being registered for the new season. According to Chiefs medical doctors, Camaldien Abraw will only return 3 months before the end of the league’s first round.
Although Bobby Motaung promised the fans to sign more players before the start of the season, fans are now questioning his promise. Most fans are not happy with Bobby as the team manager. He once told Chiefs fans that he did not apply for the job and the team is a family business. That angered the fans and his father Mr. Kaizer Motaung who apologized to the fans afterwards.
Bobby seems very confident about the players they signed but the fans are not happy at all. They feel the team will not match their arch rivals Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns. Kaizer Chiefs were the easy boys against Pirates and Sundowns last season. They were wallowed 3 – 1 by Orlando Pirates, which signaled the lack of quality players at the club. Although the team managed to beat Pirates at the Carling Black Label Cup on the 31st August, many fans are still not satisfied in terms of quality and depth compared to the likes of Pirates and Sundowns. The management seems to be repeating the same mistake they have been doing over the years. Fans are gunning for Bobby’s removal as team manager.
If the new singed players fail to impress the fans, Bobby will be under enormous pressure from the fans and they might even boycott attending Chiefs games. If they perform well, then his life at Chiefs will be easy. The PSL is getting tougher each season and teams are all equal, gone are the days were there were small teams.
