“He is from Durban and his family and friends are there to support him. When we were approached by Amazulu there was no hesitation. Lunga has been fantastic to us and we thank him by signing this extension.”
AmaZulu have moved quickly to tie down their captain, Mbongeni ‘Shoes’ Gumede, with the former Orlando Pirates youngster penning a new long-term deal.
The 24-year-old was almost ever-present for Usuthu last season having been named as the club’s captain, playing a vital role as they managed to secure their place in the Absa Premiership and avoid relegation to the National First Division.
‘Shoes’ played 27 games in all competitions for Cavin Johnson’s side after the club made his loan move a permanent deal from Bucs, and he has been rewarded with an improved deal despite the fact that he still had one year left to run on his contract.
Gumede has now put pen to paper on a three-year deal with AmaZulu that will run until 2021, committing himself to the club for the foreseeable future as he seeks to help them achieve even bigger things in 2018/19.
Vasili Barbis, the player’s agent, confirmed the news, saying, “It’s a great deal for both parties involved. Shoes has made leaps and bounds at Amazulu, and his loyalty to the club while being relegated was rewarded with the captaincy.
