It was reported during the 2015/2016 Absa Premiership season that Doctor Khumalo was not Seeing eye to eye with Steve Khompela during some Chiefs games. There are rumours that Doctor even questioned some of the team’s tactics during a match.

The fight between the two is an infight that Chiefs management does not want it to be known to the supporters and the public. It was reported that “16V” as he is known to his admirers was against the decision for Chiefs to employ Komphela as Chiefs coach.

Our Sources can reveal that after Stuart Baxter’s departure, Doctor was expecting to be given a chance to be Chiefs’ head coach as he has been in the team for more than 20 years and he is familiar with the position as he was Baxter’s assistant during the 2014/2015 season. Instead Bobby went as far as signing Khompela as Kaizer Chiefs’ coach while Khumalo was waiting for that chance.

Doctor Khumalo was born on the 26th June 1967 which makes him 5 days older than Steve Kompela as he was born on the 1st July 1967. Khumalo and Khompela played together for Chiefs and Bafana Bafana from 1992 until 1995 although Steve was not part of the Bafana team that won the 1996 AFCON in South Africa.

Khumalo is in possession of a SAFA Level 1, 2 and 3 coaching licenses, an English Football Association Licence and a EUFA B licence, although he does not have much of the senior team coaching experience as he has only managed to be an assistant coach to Stuart Baxter. For these reasons he feels he must be given a chance to coach Kaizer Chiefs.

Steve Kompela is in possession of no professional coaching licence yet he has has been given chances to coach professional teams like Manning Rangers, Dynamos, South Africa U20, Maritzburg United, South Africa U23, Free State Stars, Platinum Stars, Bafana (Caretaker coach) and now Kaizer chiefs.

Looking at all the facts given above, I think Khumalo is on point by fighting for the coaching job at Chiefs. He has all the required qualification yet he has not been given a chance while Steve has no coaching qualifications yet he has been given enough chance to coach professional teams. On the other hand he is younger to Khumalo by 5 days.

Last week it was revealed that Doctor Khumalo will be Kaizer Chiefs ‘new technical director. Khan said Doctor Khumalo is the right man for the job as he knows Chiefs’ culture and that is the only team he knows in South Africa.

Chiefs has been experiencing a lot of problems with their development structures a few years ago as there were problems with age cheating and other problems which led to the development structure being terminated.

Since the promotion of Lorenzo Gordino, Chiefs has struggled to promote players from their development ranks. Khumalo, however, says the club is addressing the issue.

“We are kind of like embarking on a structure whereby we are going to have a five-year plan and we are going to be able to get four to five players that will be Kaizer Chiefs material,” says Khumalo to a Kick Off magazine Journalist.

The 48-year-old Chiefs legend believes too many youngsters lose focus when they break through into the professional ranks.

“Because when you get players to be promoted in the senior team most of the boys it is luxury and then they forget why they are there. Big cheques, nice life, the first big cheque the guys buy cars and they don’t even buy houses anymore… that is something that is not even existing anymore.”

According to the media reports, Khompela has been given the green light to appoint his own assistant for the 2016/2017 season. Reports suggest that Komphela intends to bring in his former assistant at Maritzburg United, Mandla Ncikazi, who is currently working with Clinton Larsen at Golden Arrows. Ncikazi has been linked with the assitant role at Chiefs since Komphela made his big move to the Soweto giants in June last year.
