Mamelodi Sundowns strengths and weaknesses

Mamelodi Sundowns Football Club is currently the best team in the Premier Soccer League (PSL). The team is also participating in the CAF Champions League to prove to the rest of the continent that they are definitely the best team in the African continent. Even the best teams in the world have their strengths and weaknesses, like Sundowns, they also have their best and worst. Let us look at the strengths and weaknesses Mamelodi Sundowns possesses.

Sundowns strengths are in their goalkeepers, midfielders and strikers. They have the best goalkeepers in Dennis Onyango and Kennedy Mwene.  In the middle of play, they have Thlompho Kekana as a central midfield. Thlompho has power, energy, speed, skills, and everything a complete football player should have. He is the pillar of Sundowns. He forms a great partnership alongside any of these midfielders: Keagan Dolly, Khama Billiat, Tiyani Mabunda, Themba Zwane, Asavela Mbekile, Mzikayise Mashaba, Teko Modise, and Lucky Mohomi.

Sundowns has the best midfielders in South African football. Coach Pitso Mosimane can field any player alongside Thlompho Kekana and the team will do great. They recently outclassed one of the African giants, Zamalek of Egypt, to show that they are currently the best team in South Africa and the rest of the continent.

Sundowns strikers are also the best. The Columbian forward Learnardo Castro has been banging goals left and right. He has also contributed a lot in goals scored by his team mates, Khama Billiat and Keagan Dolly. The 3 players have formed a force known as the “CBD”. They are very fast when moving forward and can score more than 6 goals if the team they are playing against is not careful. They have also added Sibusiso Vilakazi to their books. Vilakazi is one of the best strikers in the country.

Sundowns’ weaknesses are in their defense and sometimes in the midfield. They are a bit slow at the back and they tend to move a lot backwards towards their goalkeeper when they are under attack. The defense of Siyanda Zwane, Thabo Nthethe, Tebogo Langerman, and Wayne Arendse has been exposed a lot of times. Their problem is lack of full game concentration and they tend to get tired just in the second half of each game. If a team they are playing against could make 3 or 4 attacks simultaneously, they get frustrated and lose focus.

In the midfield, if Thlompho is not playing well, suspended or injured, the team does not perform according to their standards. They are relying too much on Thlompho Kekana. He has now been given the captaincy of the team and the responsibilities are going to increase which is going to be very difficult for him.

Solution to their weaknesses

Sundowns has roped in the Brazillian defender Ricardo Nascimento. The Brazillian is yet to feature in an official game for Sundowns, but so far he has impressed in the few friendly games he played for Sundowns. He has pace and that was one of the weaknesses in the Sundowns defense. Nascimento has the ability to man mark any player and also add midfielders when the team is attacking.

In the midfield Sundowns has acquired the services of Lucky Mohomi. The former Free State Stars man has all the similarities of Thlompho Kekana. He is a great signee for Sundowns. Indeed Pitso has an eye for players and by adding these 2 players, he has managed to address the weaknesses at Sundowns. It is up to these 2 players to prove if the weaknesses of Sundowns are addressed.
