Mamelodi Sundowns face their toughest week in the history of South African football. On Wednesday the 21st September they face Chippa United in the second leg of the MTN 8 Semifinals on which they played a nil-nil draw in Eastern Cape. On Saturday the 24th September they are going to play ZESCO United of Zambia in the second leg of the CAF Champions League Semifinals on which they lost the first leg by 2 goals to 1 in Zambia.
Now they have to choose which competition is their priority or else they can also treat both competitions equally and face any risk that comes their way. If they play Chippa United with the same players they are going to use against ZESCO, they might get injuries and even lose both games.
They made it clear that the CAF Champions League game is their priority and if they field their second string team against Chippa United they might lose the spot into the MTN 8 Semifinal with no guarantee that they will win against ZESCO with their first string team.
According to football fans around the country, Sundowns must use their first team in both semifinals. Sundowns fans are expecting their team to go to the finals of both competitions. They are not aware of the fatigue and injuries that might hamper their chances of advancing to the finals of the CAF Champions League finals.
South Africans are hoping that Sundowns will win against ZESCO United as they are representing the country against other African countries. Sundowns have depth in their team to carry them through to the finals of both competitions and even win them. It all depends on the planning of the technical team and the mindset of players they are going to use in both games.
This week will test Sundowns if they will be able to defend their title and win other competitions in the Premier Soccer League. The same happened with Orlando Pirates back in 2013 and 2015 when they were campaigning in the CAF competitions and the domestic league and other competitions.
Coach Pitso Mosimane will spend sleepless nights this week due to planning for both games especially the game against ZESCO United. Sundowns need to win both games by a goal to zero to advance to the finals of both competitions. On the other hand they are behind in games for their PSL league campaign.
