Maritzburg United Football Club survived the relegation zone by the last minute. The 2015/16 season was not a good one for Maritzburg United. What is surprising about this team is that it has a lot of talented players. The team is currently enjoying rivalry with Golden Arrows in the Kwa-Zulu Natal province since the relegation of Amazulu Football Club. Maritzburg United will be one of the teams gearing for a better season in the 2016/17 PSL season. Winning a trophy would be a dream for this team but their main focus should be to stabilize the team in the elite league and be able to build a reputation that would last for a long time in elite football. Let us look at the strengths and the weaknesses of the Maritzburg United team basing on their performance last season and how they are strengthening their team before the new season.
Maritzburg’ strengths are in their character in the field of play, fans, their midfield and their main striker. The team has great fighting spirit and they are determined to win almost each and every game they play although they end up losing most of their games. Most of the games they lost last season, were games were they were dominating their opponents. This team is one of difficult teams to beat in the PSL and they also enjoy a lot of support from fans in their province whenever they play at home. Most of the games they lost are away games where their fans are very limited.
Their midfield is more of an attacking midfield and most chances are created from the midfield. Maritzburg has great talent in the midfield positions. The likes of Manti Mekoa, Kurt Leintjies, and Dillon Mekoa, are great players with enough experience to help the team win a trophy or two in the next season with the help of the new signees in the team. In the wings they have the likes of Shandu and Zulu who are capable of providing scoring chances to their strikers.
Their main striker position is full of top options in the likes of Evans Rusike, Mokate and Maarsdorp, although Evans Rusike managed to cement himself a regular start for the team. Rusike is a proven goal scorer and he has scored unbelievable goals for the team especially in the last matches of last season. The team has also added Andrea Fileccia to their team. Fileccia has scored a lot of goals for Free State Stars Football Club before he was injured last season in the PSL campaign.
The team tends to commit set pieces in areas where they end up conceding goals. Their defense’s timing is questionable especially when they are under pressure. Instead of picking free players in the eighteen area box, they always stand next to their goalkeeper expecting to clear the ball from going in. the left and right backs are not consistent during matches and most of the time they limit themselves going forward which creates too much work for their midfielders and also create a hard of closing on offside situations of the opponents.
Solution to their weaknesses
The team has brought in new quality players who are experienced and there is no doubt that the team will surprise a lot of teams in the PSL. This team may be able to win a trophy or two in the new season.
The new players are as follows: Bevan Fransman, Bryce Moon, Andrea Fileccia, Themba Shabalala, Bongani Mpandle, Blessing Moyo, Lebohang Maboe, Devon Saal, Luyanda Ntshangase, Siphesihle Ndlovu, Mondli Dlamini, and Tso Motjatji.
