Kaizer Chiefs coach Ernst Middendorp has confirmed he will stick with goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi despite his blunder against Polokwane City over the weekend.
Akpeyi has been on the receiving end of plenty of criticism as he arguably cost his side three important points as they were held to a 1-1 draw away to Rise and Shina last Saturday.
The stalemate sees Amakhosi remain nine points adrift of log leaders Bidvest Wits, with just nine games remaining in the Absa Premiership campaign.
Middendorp openly expressed his discontent over what transpired at the Peter Mokaba Stadium and called Akpeyi out for his blunder, however, he assured the pecking order will not change ahead of their clash with Highlands Park at the Moses Mabhida Stadium this weekend.
“No, it’s not about [the one mistake]. We’ll observe it during the week, and we have the next game on the weekend [against Highlands Park], and then we will see,” said Middendorp.
“Actually, it’s not fooling around – Daniel is the goalkeeper in the league and Bruce [Bvuma] is playing the Nedbank Cup, that’s where we are standing at the moment.
“You’ll understand, please, that at the time directly after a game I can confirm it.”
Virgil Vries committed numerous mistakes during his spell between the sticks without Middendorp taking action, thus the German is likely to give the Nigerian his fair chance to redeem himself.
