Orlando Pirates’ midfielder says he always wanted to play for Pirates

Orlando Pirates recruit Linda Mntambo has expressed delight over his move to his local club and cannot wait to get stuck into the new season.

Pirates last week confirmed a raft of new signings, including the likes of Brilliant Khuzwayo and Asavela Mbekile, while also ending speculation over Mntambo’s future.

The former Chippa United midfielder was recently welcomed to the club’s headquarters at the Rand Stadium by assistant coach Rhulani Mokwena, as he was briefed on what is expected of him as a Buccaneer.

“I had a good time with the orientation because I have always wanted to be a Buccaneer,” commented Mntambo on his club’s website.

”I live across the road from the stadium so I have always supported the team. I never missed a game at Orlando while I was growing up and I always dreamt of seeing myself playing here.”

The 29-year-old still remembers the thrashing his Jomo Cosmos side picked up in his maiden run out at the Bucs’ slaughter house in 2016, but is delighted to finally be calling it ‘home’.

“The last time I played here was terrible though; we lost 5-0 to Pirates while I was still at Jomo Cosmos,” he added.

“I remember being very sad as I walked home after the game but also felt a little bit of joy for playing on the pitch despite the result.

”Now that I’m officially a Buccaneer, I’m over the moon and can’t wait for the season to start.”

’Figo’, as the central midfielder is affectionately known, has since reflected on his time at The Chilli Boys, with whom he spent only six months after his swicth from Ezenkosi in January, and has lauded chairman Chippa Mpengesi for allowing him to spread his wings after such a brief spell in Port Elizabeth.

“It’s a great opportunity being here and reuniting with my former team-mates Phetso [Maphanga] and Diamond [Thopola],” he noted.

”People always say that Chippa United is the Pirates development team, but what they don’t realise is that the team gives us the platform to play so that we are seen by big teams like Pirates.

”And when they come knocking the chairman Mr Mpengesi is always willing to let us go. He’s not selfish with the talent and he gives us the opportunity to go and fulfil our dreams.

“It’s every boy’s dream to play for one of the big teams, especially Orlando Pirates, and for me being a very near local makes me very excited to be here.”
