Advice has been offered to Linda Mntambo before considering a move to Orlando Pirates, if the midfielder finalises a switch from Chippa United to the Soweto giants.
Mntambo is one of the players linked with a move to Bucs during this off-season, following his successful switch from Jomo Cosmos to Chippa in January.
Indications from sources close to Pirates and Chippa is that the two clubs are expected to finalise with the matter, although there has been no official comment from any of them at this stage.
In the meantime, former Pirates midfielder Gerald Modabi has offered his advice to Mntambo on the potential move.
“He will have to understand that playing for Pirates will have its distractions. He will start attracting more female fans and more hangers-on. Those are the things that can derail the progress of a footballer with potential to go on and become a big name player, and possibly play for Bafana Bafana,” said Modabi.
Jomo, as Modabi is known in football circles, is adamant that Mntambo would be a perfect signing for Bucs.
“It would be a good move for him, especially as he would get to play under someone like Micho (Milutin Sredojevic), who likes talented players. I know him (Sredojevic), as I’ve worked with him. I don’t know why he (Mntambo) shouldn’t join a team like Orlando Pirates. I know that some former professional footballers might say, ‘No, it’s too early for him to make the move… and all that.’ I refuse. It’s about Linda Mntambo right now, not some of us that have played for the club in the past,” concluded Modabi.
