Snap shots in the PSL

These are the latest developments in the Premier Soccer League (PSL):

  • New Ajax Cape Town signing Lebohang Mokoena believes he still has a shot at representing Bafana Bafana if he gets regular playing time. The last time Mokoena featured on the international stage was back in June 2012, when South Africa defeated Gabon 3-0 in a friendly match played in Nelspruit. However, he has not given up hope of making his mark at Bafana, and is adamant he can still catch the eye of coach Shakes Mashaba once he starts playing regularly.
  • Felipe Ovono could find himself in trouble again regarding his future with Orlando Pirates, following his disappointing start to the season. While the player’s disappointing performances between the sticks for Bucs have been attributed to a psychological problem, sources have indicated that the shot-stopper is facing an uncertain future at the club.
  • SAFA President, Dr. Danny Jordaan has urged the nation to come out and support Bafana Bafana in the Nelson Mandela Challenge on Tuesday, September 6.
  • Veteran defender Ruben Cloete says he is enjoying some quality time with family at home – a rarity in his 13-year PSL career.
  • May Mahlangu could be the next Bafana Bafana international to ply his trade in South Africa’s top flight for the first time. Chiefs approached the out-of-contract 27-year-old about a possible move to Naturena ahead of the 2016/17 season. However, the player reportedly turned down the offer from Chiefs in June, as he was planning to continue playing in Europe.
  • Former Bafana Bafana defender, Fabian McCarthy, has said that Shakes Mashaba needs to build his team around the players that were part of the squad that travelled to Rio for the Olympic Games.
  • Midfielder Toriq Losper is thrilled to have put his contractual disagreements to bed after signing a new deal with Ajax Cape Town.
  • Cameroonian midfielder Armand Ella is one of the new players for Free State Stars, having joined the Bethlehem outfit before the transfer window deadline on Wednesday.
  • Ambitious First Division club Royal Eagles have cast their hands far and wide in their search for a striker by turning to Colombian forward Victor Alberto Salazar Cuesta. Salazar is due to arrive in South Africa on Friday after flying from Colombia on Wednesday. The 25-year-old has played all of his football in Colombia and is actually very close to Mamelodi Sundowns forward Leonardo Castro – who he was teammates with at Millonarios.
  • Golden Arrows’ winger Kudakwashe Mahachi could be set for some time on the sidelines with a fractured arm. Mahachi had been called up for Zimbabwe’s upcoming 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Guinea on the weekend. Sources close to Arrows have confirmed that the player fractured his arm during training session with his national team. The 22-year-old is expected to be out of competitive football for more than a month, as he looks set to undergo surgery to mend his arm on his return to the KZN outfit.
  • The PSL have confirmed that their General Manager, Derek Blanckensee, has parted ways with the league after charges were laid against him. Recent media reports have indicated that charges were laid against Mr. Blanckensee by the League.
  • The Premier Soccer League has announced the dates, venues and kick-off times for the first leg of the MTN8 semi-finals. On Saturday, 10 September, Bidvest Wits will be at home at Cape Town City FC at the Bidvest Stadium. The match will start at 20h15. Chippa United will host Mamelodi Sundowns at the Nelson Mandela Stadium at 15h00. Tickets are R60 and will be sold at TicketPro outlets. The PSL will communicate ticket availability in due course and details for the return leg.
  • Nedbank Ke Yona Team captain, Bongani Mbuli is confident that this year’s team will cause an upset against their more fancied opponents as they gear up to take on SuperSport United.
  • Ajax Cape Town’s new signing Mark Mayambela has expressed excitement at his move to the Urban Warriors and wants to use his opportunity at Ikamva to honour his late friend Cecil Lolo.
  • SuperSport United defender Clayton Daniels has welcomed the signing of centre-back Tefu Mashamaite and feels Stuart Baxter’s side are now the team to watch this season.
