South African top coaches in the PSL




The Premier Soccer League (PSL) has seen a lot of coaches since its inception. In the early days of the PSL, teams used to consider coaches from outside of South Africa, but now things have changed and we have seen a lot of local coaches being provided with a chance to coach in the PSL. Let us look at all South African coaches who coached and won in the PSL and rank them according to their achievements and the number of trophies they won.

  1. Pitso Mosimane

Pitso is the most successful coach in the history of the Premier Soccer League (PSL). His achievements are far better than European coaches who also coached in the PSL. Pitso has won every trophy that is available in the PSL. He has won everything that has been put in front of every coach. Pitso’s first trophy was the SAA Supa Cup in 2004 when he was coaching Supersport United. The second one was the ABSA Cup in 2005 which he won while coaching Supersport United. He then went on to clinch the league title in 2013/2014 season with Mamelodi Sundowns. After that he won the Telkom Knockout and the Nedbank Cup both in 2015. He then won the 2015/16 league title. In total, Pitso has collected 6 trophies since the inception of the PSL in 1997. Pitso is still the Sundowns coach.

  1. Gordon Igesund

Gordon was the first coach to win the PSL league title when he won it with the then Manning Rangers during its inception in 1997. He also won the league title with Santos, Pirates, and Sundowns. He also won the BP Top 8 with Pirates in 2000 and also won the Telkom Knockout Cup with Supersport. In total, Gordon has won 6 trophies in total, the same number as Pitso. The difference with him and Pitso is that Pitso has won each and every trophy in the PSL. Currently Gordon has been appointed to coach the Zambian National team.

  1. Gavin Hunt

Gavin Hunt is the 3rd most successful coach in the history of the PSL. He has won the league 3 times with Supersport from 2008 to 2010. Gavin’s first trophy was the ABSA Cup which he won in 2004 with Moroka Swallows. He also won the Nedbank Cup with Supersport in 2012. In total, Gavin has collected 5 trophies which position him right behind Pitso and Gordon. Gavin is currently the Bidvest Wits coach.

  1. Roger De Sa and Allan Freese

Roger De Sa has won the Nedbank Cup with Wits and also the MTN 8 with Ajax Cape Town. He is still the Ajax coach.

Allan Freese has won the MTN8 and the Telkom Knockout Cup in 2013 with Platinum Stars. Allan is currently coaching Highlandspark who will be making their debut season in the PSL.

  1. Clive Barker and Clinton Larsen

Clive has won the Bobsave Super Bowl in 2001 while coaching Santos, while Clinton Larsen has won the Telkom Knockout Cup with Bloemfontein Celtics in 2012. Clive is currently not coaching any team while Clinton is coaching Golden Arrows.

  1. Gordon Igesund

Gordon has won 4 league trophies with 4 different teams which are Manning Rangers, Santos, Pirates, and Sundowns.

  1. Gavin Hunt

Gavin has won 3 league titles, all with Supersport United.

  1. Pitso Mosimane

Pitso has managed to collect 2 league trophies in the PSL.

  2. Roger De Sa has 377 points from 279 matches
  3. Steve Komphela has 314 points from 226 matches
