Supersport United strengths and weaknesses

Supersport United Football Club is one of the successful teams in the Premier Soccer League (PSL). The team is one of the teams that managed to win the league in South Africa and they also won couple of trophies. The team is still yet to prove to the rest of the African continent that they are capable of competing in the highest levels of football. Supersport has seen the ups and downs in their existence in the history of South African football. Their recent success was when they defeated Orlando Pirates in the finals of the Nedbank Cup to pocket themselves millions and a trophy. Let us look at the strengths and weaknesses of the Supersport United Football Club.

Strengths

Supersport United’s strengths are playing as unit (coaching), defending, and their strikers. Their current coach Stuart Baxter has proved to be one of the best coaches so far. He has won trophies with Chiefs and now he has started winning again with Supersport after clinching the Nedbank Cup in his first season with Supersport united where he joined them already in their 2015/2016 PSL campaign. One aspect for sure about Stuart Baxter is that he provides players with simple and understandable football tactics and does not show frustrations while the game is still on. He is a good motivator and a good teacher.

Since the arrival of Baxter, Supersport’s performance on the field of play has been much better than before. The team plays as a unit and they are all involved when defending, attacking and when it comes to scoring goals.

Their midfielders are hard workers and they have a lot of energy. The inclusion of Dean Furman in the team has provided the team with a great team leader and a hard worker in the middle of play. The likes of Michael Morton, Thuso Phala, and the rest of the guys in the midfield, are very determined to beat any team and they are full season campaigners. They don’t give respect to any opponents they face. They don’t provide room for opponents to knock the ball in the midfield positions.

Their strikers Jerome Brockie and Grobbler are deadly in front of goals. They can score a lot of goals from nowhere. Any chance to score goals is what they prefer.

Weaknesses

The team’s weaknesses are their goalkeeper, control in the midfield, and their style of man marking. Their goalkeeper Ronwan Williams is one of the great keepers but in recent times he has let in goals that were not supposed to have been goals. He tends to position himself away from the poles a lot of times and he is often caught tracking backwards instead of going towards the oncoming balls.

Another weakness is that the midfielders tends to just play the ball forward even though it is not necessary at times. They don’t give themselves enough time to make buildups from the midfield. They seem to be scared of losing possession in the middle.

When it comes to man marking, the Supersport’s defenders tends to forget the spaces/pockets to the flanks. They are always caught waiting for opponents to play passes to their flanks before committing to tackle them. This seems to be a dangerous tactic as they are always caught fouling opponents in dangerous positions in the left and right flanks of opponents.

Solution to their weaknesses

The team has managed to sign Riyaad Pieterse from Kaizer Chiefs who is a great goalkeeper. Pieterse has proven to be difficult to beat while playing for Kaizer Chiefs. He will definitely get the first preference at Supersport as he has previously worked under Stuart Baxter while he was still a Chiefs coach.

In the midfield positions, the team has managed to sign the best central defender in the country, Cole Alexander, from Polokwane City Football Club. Cole will add stability in the midfield and will help in the buildups. The team has also acquired the services of Reneilwe Letsolonyane from Kaizer Chiefs. Letsolonyane is one of the best midfielders who can make the team play and he has enough experience which will help the team.

By signing these players, Supersport has done their homework to make sure they reduce their weaknesses. The team will definitely be fighting for the league title and trophies come next season.
