Was it the right move for Kutumela?

Thabiso Kutumela has moved from Baroka FC to Orlando Pirates FC for the upcoming 2016/2017 Premier Soccer League (PSL) Season. He had one of the best seasons with Baroka FC for their promotional campaign from the National First Division (NFD) to PSL. He ended the season as the NFD leading goal scorer.

It is every youngster’s dream to play for a top team like Orlando Pirates in South Africa. Pirates’ objectives are very high. They aim at conquering South African soccer and the rest of Africa. Each and every soccer player dreams of winning major soccer competitions which are recognized worldwide.

Thabiso Kutumela is still very young not to play his football regularly. The option of moving to a demanding team like Orlando Pirates seems a bit too early for him. He should have stayed with Baroka FC for another season or two before moving to Pirates. It is not a bad idea for a youngster to dream big but sometimes youngsters must learn to establish their careers before deciding to move for demanding situations.

Being a leading top goal scorer at the NFD does not guarantee Thabiso that he will be able to score goals in the PSL. Reflecting on what happened to a few youngsters who were leading goal scorers in the NFD, we should be not to rush them in to top flight football before establishing their careers in the so called small teams. An example should be that of Moeketsi Sekola who is currently playing for Free State Stars. Sekola is struggling at the Free State side and could be offloaded in the new season. The reason he is struggling is because he was not ready for the top flight football.

Thabiso should have decided to play for Baroka again in their new campaign in the PSL to avoid unnecessary pressure that comes with playing for Orlando Pirates. At Pirates he will be expected to score goals regularly, which seems too much for a youngster. The move is definitely good one for him and we will not be surprised if he is offloaded or loaned to another team during the new season.

One of the reasons South Africa is not producing top quality strikers for the national team is because the upcoming strikers are rushed too early for bigger challenges. All promising strikers should not be signed by teams that will not use them as that will destroy their confidence and talent.

We are struggling as a country to find replacements for the likes of Benni McCarthy, Shaun Bartlett, Phillemon Masinga, Fani Madida, Jerry Skhosana, Lesley Manyathela, and many more. We are not doing ourselves any favors by rushing young strikers who still have to learn a lot about scoring goals. These youngsters should be able to play regularly so that they could gain themselves all the necessary knowledge and experience of being a complete striker who is able to score goals regularly.

Pirates should be able to afford Thabiso enough game time so that he does not lose focus and that will be difficult as Pirates fans expect nothing less than scoring goals as a Pirates striker. The likes of Thamsanqa Gabuza, Kermit Erasmus, Lehlohonolo Majoro, and Tendai Ndoro has all been booed in the past by Pirates fans for not scoring as expected.
