Kaizer chiefs known as Amakhosi, the glamour boys of Pefeni. Up to date Kaizer Chiefs FC is the only successful team in the history of South African football. The team has won most trophies than any other team in South Africa. The team was formed by Mr Kaizer Motaung on the 7th January 1970 after his return from the United States of America where he was playing for Atlanta Chiefs. The name Kaizer Chiefs comes from the combination of his name Kaizer and the last name of the team he played for in the United States, which is Chiefs. The Kaizer Chiefs logo was also taken from the Atlanta Chiefs logo which is a famous symbol of associated American Indian Tribe. The team was known as Kaizer XI when it was formed.
A lot of people has played a role in the formation of Kaizer Chiefs. The founder Kaizer Motaung was an Orlando Pirates FC player before playing in the United States. Mr Motaung was determined to build a team that would be successful without any problems as there were a lot of problems with the ownership of Orlando Pirates FC.
Kaizer Chiefs has never been relegated from the top division of South African football, now called the Premier Soccer League (PSL). The other teams that have never been relegated are Mamelodi Sundowns FC, Orlando Pirates FC, and Supersport United FC. The team is regarded as one of the best teams in Africa today according to the Confederations of African Football (CAF).
The history indicates that the Kaizer Chiefs team has attracted a lot of fans in the country and the surrounding countries like Lesotho, Swaziland, Botswana, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Mozambique, and a few other African countries. In 46 years of its existence, Kaizer Chiefs has grown so big that they are the number one supported team in the PSL. The team has a lot of following wherever they play, we may say that they don’t feel like playing away from home whenever they visit their opposition teams as they have managed to outnumber the home team in every game they play away from home in the Premier Soccer League.
Today the team is facing a bit of a struggle in terms of winning trophies due to a lot of changes in the team. The team parted ways with their former coach Stuart Baxter after a successful 2014/2015 season where they managed to win the league title and a cup competition trophy. The new coach Mr Steve Komphela was recruited for the 2015/2016 season and he failed to win a single trophy with the team although he managed to reach 2 cup finals. Due to a lot of pressure from fans as they are used to winning trophies, the team is undergoing a total change in plying personnel and they are rebuilding the team. The current squad has been regarded as ageing as a lot of senior players were of age 29 and above. The team new captain will be Willard Katsande, he will be replacing Siphiwe Tshabalala.
The team supporters are awaiting the announcement of new signings in the team and they cannot wait to see them in action. The team manager Bobby Motaung is expected to acquire top talent from within the country and other African countries. The few new players will have a chance to be tested in an annual Black label Cup match between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates. Bobby is in a lot of pressure from fans to sign quality and talented players for the team. The question that lies ahead is whether the team is consulting with the coach Steve Komphela when signing players or not.
The whole of South Africa is awaiting the announcement of new talent at Kaizer Chiefs and whether they will be able to return the team to its winning hobby. We hope the team management is doing their best to get all the talent needed to make the Chiefs grade instead of signing a lot of average players like they have been doing in the past 2 to 3 seasons.
The Chiefs development side was known to produce top players, but today the development side is struggling to produce top players as it is still undergoing an overhaul due to a few problems encountered with age cheating in all development structures of the team. We hope in a year or two, the development side will also be able to produce quality players like they did in a few seasons ago.
What I can say is Halala Amakhosi Halala!!!!!
